SAN ANTONIO — UTSA will continue Southland Conference play on Sunday when it travels to San Marcos for a 1 p.m. matchup with I-35 rival Texas State.
The Roadrunners (4-6-1, 1-1 SLC) split a pair of matches to open league play last weekend. UTSA fell to preseason favorite Stephen F. Austin, 3-0, before defeating Sam Houston State, 2-0. Sophomores Laylla da Cruz and Edith Lopez notched their first goals of the season and fellow soph Ari Calderon picked up her first career shutout in the triumph against the Bearkats.
Steve Ballard's team ranks fourth in the circuit in points (67), goals (23) and assists (21), while the defense has recorded four shutouts this season.
The Bobcats enter the match with a 6-5 overall record and a 1-1 mark in conference action. Felicia Leask, Kendell Webber and Serena Hines each have four goals to lead Texas State, which is 6-3 at home this season. All-Southland goalkeeper Lauren Frazier has three shutouts and allowed just 10 goals on the year. The Bobcats had a four-match winning streak snapped by Stephen F. Austin last Sunday when the Ladyjacks scored in the final minute for a 1-0 victory.
UTSA leads the all-time series 2-1-2, including a 1-0 win on Oct. 1 last season. The victory was the Roadrunners’ first against Texas State in the Alamo City and snapped a 19-match conference unbeaten streak for the Bobcats.
