HUNTSVILLE — Tim Flanders had four receptions for 93 yards and added another 91 on the ground, as 16th-ranked Sam Houston State held off UTSA (2-3) by a score of 22-7 on Saturday night at Bowers Stadium.
Torrance Williams added 96 rushing yards on just two carries, including a 59-yard reverse for a touchdown in the third quarter.
The Bearkats (4-0) got on the board first when Roadrunners quarterback Eric Soza was flagged for intentional grounding in the end zone with 2:14 remaining in the opening quarter.
Richard Sincere's 2-yard scoring toss to Keyshawn Hill with 1:33 left in the first half increased the advantage to eight.
After Williams pushed the lead to 15, Soza capped a 13-play, 39-yard scoring drive with a 1-yard plunge four seconds into the fourth quarter.
Flanders put the game out of reach eight-and-a-half minutes later when he reached paydirt from 10 yards out.
Soza connected on 26-of-52 passes for 217 yards and three interceptions, while Kam Jones caught seven for 103 yards to become the first receiver in program history to eclipse the century mark.
Steven Kurfehs led the UTSA defense with 13 tackles (9 solos/4 assists), including one for loss, and he also forced a fumble and intercepted a pass for the second game in a row.
The Roadrunners return to the friendly confines of the Alamodome next Saturday, Oct. 8, when they host South Alabama (2-2) at 4:30 p.m.
