FRISCO — Middle hitters McKenzie Adams and Brittney Malloy were named Southland Conference Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, the league office announced on Monday. It marks the third time this season that UTSA has swept the league's weekly awards.
Adams netted her second weekly award of the year after leading the Roadrunners with 25 kills (4.17 kps) and a .639 hitting percentage in sweeps at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and McNeese State. The Schertz native, who also earned the award on Sept. 19, added a dozen digs (2.0 dps), 11 total blocks (1.83 bps) and three service aces in the two victories.
The 6-foot-3 sophomore set a program record after hitting at a .762 clip on the strength of 16 winners to go along with six blocks against the Cowgirls on Saturday. That came on the heels of a nine-kill, five-block performance against the Islanders on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Malloy collected the first weekly honor of her career after posting 11 total blocks (1 solo/10 assists) and anchoring a UTSA defensive effort that limited its two opponents to a .091 hitting percentage. The San Antonio native also added 12 winners (2.0 kps) and a dig.
The 6-foot junior began the week with seven kills, five total blocks and a dig at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. She then helped the Birds to their sixth consecutive sweep with five winners and six total blocks at McNeese State.
UTSA (12-8, 6-0 SLC) returns to the court at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday when it opens a four-match home stand against Southeastern Louisiana (4-19, 0-6 SLC).
