SAN ANTONIO — UTSA racked up 14 victories during the Friday's opening day of the UTSA Invitational. The Roadrunners netted eight wins in singles action and a half dozen in doubles play.
Juniors Martin Ayala and Tyler Brown and sophomore Yannick Junger all advanced to the quarterfinals of the top singles flight.
Ayala and Junger received first-round byes before winning their second-round match in the afternoon.
Brown went the distance to defeat St. Edward's Pedro Bronstrup in three sets. Later in the day, the New Braunfels native topped freshman teammate David Kelleher in straight sets (6-3, 6-2).
Kelleher, senior Pedro Zanotelli, sophomore Oliver Breininger and freshman Joel Rubio all earned first-round victories before falling to their second opponent.
Sophomore Kolby Kilgo lost his opening-round match, but he bounced back to move past Lamar's Gabriel Aboitiz in three sets (6-7, 6-3, 1-0 [10-8]) in the consolation round.
Sophomore Tim Kuo earned a 6-1, 6-2 win against St. Edward's Jonathan Stockdale in the second flight.
In doubles action, Ayala and Brown teamed up to advance to the semifinals after posting victories over duos from Lamar and Texas-Pan American. Junger and Zanotelli also reached the semifinals with a pair of wins.
Tournament action will continue on Saturday morning.
