ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Led by sophomore Ryan Werre, the UTSA men's golf team sits in ninth place after Friday's opening 36 holes of the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate.
Werre carded an first-round 76, but he came back strong in the afternoon with a two-under-par 70 and is tied for 10th place at four-over 146, five shots behind individual leader Zachary Blair of BYU, who shot a 139 (69-70).
Much like Werre, the Roadrunners fought back with a solid second round, as they turned in a 10-over 298 on the second 18 after recording a 305 earlier in the day. Their 36-hole total of 598 puts them two shots back of New Mexico State and just three behind Arizona State for seventh. No. 11 UNLV leads the field after shooting a 580 (292-288), which is one shot better than tournament host New Mexico.
Redshirt freshman Martin Board is tied for 29th after registering a first-day 149 (75-74), while junior Stanton Tondre is tied for 47th with a 151 (76-75). Junior Mitchell Griffin is tied for 68th (81-74=155) and junior Nicko Dodd is tied for 85th (87-81=159).
Round three gets underway on Saturday morning.
