UTSA offense erupts in 7-0 win at Texas Southern on Tuesday night

HOUSTON — Senior Jodi Leroy and freshman Anissa Munson each scored a pair of goals to lead UTSA to a 7-0 victory at Texas Southern on Tuesday night. The win concluded a six-match road stretch to open the 2011 campaign and snapped the Roadrunners' five-game losing streak to kick off the season.

UTSA (1-5) had several attempts in the opening minutes, but Lady Tigers goalie Rebbeca Hajny kept the game scoreless.

The Birds finally broke through in the 25th minute when freshman Liv Nyhegn found the back of the net on a cross from junior Lindsay South.

Less than two minutes later, Leroy recorded her first goal of the season off a feed from sophomore Maria Jose Rojas.

The Roadrunners, who led 2-0 at the half, held Texas Southern (0-4) to just one shot in the opening 45 minutes.

UTSA wasted no time in building its lead after intermission, as Rojas collected her second winner of the season after the Ladt Tigers defense failed to clear the ball following a deflection near the net in the 49th minute.

Junior Amanda Ortegon then logged her first goal as a Roadrunner by depositing a header past Hajny for a 4-0 lead.

Leroy second strike came following touches by fellow seniors Katie Dugan and Taylor Padia in the 64th minute before Munson’s pair of goals finished off the rout.

In all, it was the highest offensive output since last season’s matchup with Texas Southern, which also ended with a 7-0 score.

UTSA, now a perfect 12-0 all-time against the Southwestern Athletic Conference, returns to the pitch for its first home match of the fall on Friday, Sept. 16, when they host Prairie View A&M at 7 p.m.
