Texas gets past Roadrunners late, 2-0

AUSTIN — UTSA held Texas in check for much of the match, but a pair of goals in the final 15 minutes gave the Longhorns a 2-0 victory in front of 1,217 fans at Mike A. Myers Stadium on Friday.

Despite being outshot in the first half, 11-3, the Roadrunners (0-5) held Texas (4-1) scoreless thanks to three saves by junior goalie Dacia Webb.

Sophomore Maria Jose Rojas and freshman Liv Nyhegn had shots late in the frame, but Alexa Gaul and the Longhorns defense held to keep the match scoreless at halftime.

Texas broke through in the 75th minute when Kristin Cummins recorded her first goal of the season off a corner kick by Kylie Doniak. Less than six minutes later, Vanessa Ibewuike took a feed from Gaul and Hannah Higgins and found the back of the net for a 2-0 advantage.

That proved to be enough for the Longhorns, who held UTSA to just one shot in the final nine minutes for the win.

Sophomore Laylla da Cruz and freshman Anissa Munson each recorded a pair of shots in the second half, while Webb logged eight saves.

The Roadrunners close out their season-opening six-match road trip on Tuesday, Sept. 6, when they travel to Houston for a 7 p.m. matchup with Texas Southern.
