UTSA soccer sweeps weekly Southland Conference accolades on Tuesday

FRISCO — Sophomores Maria Jose Rojas (offense), Anka Grotle (defense) and Danielle Snyder (goalkeeper) swept the Southland Conference's weekly awards, as announced by the league office on Tuesday. It marks the first time in program history that UTSA has swept the circuit's weekly accolades.

Rojas provided all the offense the Roadrunners (3-5-1) needed in their 2-0 defeat of Weber State last Friday. The Santiago, Chile, native recorded the first multi-goal match of her career with a pair of winners in a two-minute span to break a scoreless tie. In 79 minutes of action, Rojas recorded a .667 shooting percentage after finding the back of the net twice in just three attempts.

Grotle helped setup Rojas’ second strike with a header to go along with another solid defensive effort. The Bremanger, Norway, native played all 90 minutes for the 17th time in her career and anchored a defense that registered its third shutout of the season.

Meanwhile, Snyder logged all 90 minutes between the pipes and improved to 2-0-1 with her third career shutout. The Buda native faced a dozen shots and collected five saves in the victory.

UTSA returns to the pitch on Friday night when it opens Southland play against preseason favorite Stephen F. Austin (5-2-1). Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. at the Rec Sports Complex.
