WACO — Sophomore Yannick Junger won a pair of singles matches to reach the Round of 16 at the 11th annual Baylor/H-E-B Invitational, which was contested this weekend at the Baylor Tennis Center.
Junger advanced in the opening round with a 6-1, 6-4 victory against Oklahoma's Ryan Proctor. He added another straight-sets win in the Round of 32 with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over New Mexico State's Germain Degardin. The Stuttgart, Germany, native's run came to an end when eighth-seeded Mate Zsiga of Baylor, who also is the nation's third-ranked freshman, handed him a 6-4, 6-1 setback. Junger rebounded in a consolation match on Sunday to knock off Louisiana-Lafayette's Ted Nilsson in straight sets (6-3, 6-0).
Junior Martin Ayala advanced to the Round of 32 with a 6-4, 6-2 win against Rice's Sam Garforth-Bles.
UTSA's other two participants, sophomore Kolby Kilgo and freshman Joel Rubio, also picked up wins during the three-day tournament.
Kilgo advanced in the consolation first round after Baylor's Robbie North withdrew due to an injury. Meanwhile, Rubio earned a 6-3, 6-0 victory against Portland's Geoff Hernandez in consolation play on Sunday.
The Roadrunners will return to the court next weekend when it begins play at the nine-day ITA/D'Novo All-America Championships in Tulsa, Okla.
