UTSA to compete at Baylor/H-E-B Invitational this weekend

SAN ANTONIO — Four Roadrunners will take part in the 11th annual Baylor/H-E-B Invitational this weekend at the Hurd Tennis Center in Waco.

The three-day tournament features 16 schools and includes seven players currently ranked in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) national preseason rankings. There also are three freshmen who are ranked among the ITA's top 10 rookies.

The tournament will consist of a 64-player singles draw and 32-team doubles bracket. Action will begin at 8 a.m. on Friday and continue throughout the weekend.

Teams participating include Arizona, Baylor, Fresno State, Iowa, Louisiana-Lafayette, Laredo Community College, Maryland, Midwestern State, New Mexico State, Northwestern, Oklahoma, Portland, Rice, Texas-Pan American, UT Arlington and UTSA.

Three of the four participants for UTSA will be making their fall debuts.

Junior Martin Ayala, sophomore Yannick Junger and freshman Joel Rubio will see action for the first time this fall, while sophomore Kolby Kilgo also will join the Roadrunners' contingent.

Ayala and Junger both earned second-team All-Southland honors in doubles last spring.

Ayala, a Quito, Ecuador, native, tied for second on the team with 13 singles wins and picked up 11 victories in doubles action a year ago. Junger, a native of Stuttgart, Germany, posted nine wins while playing the majority of the season at the No. 2 singles position. He also won nine doubles matches.
