Fox signs four-year contract extension

SAN ANTONIO Director of Athletics Lynn Hickey announced Wednesday that Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Aaron Fox has signed a four-year contract extension.

An integral part of UTSA track & field for the last decade, Fox has been in charge of the men's program since 2003 and he added the women to his list of responsibilities following the merging of the two teams in July 2008. His Roadrunners career began as an assistant for both the men and women from 2000-02.

"I want to thank Lynn Hickey for giving me this opportunity," Fox said. "UTSA has become home for me and my family, and to know I'm going to be here for many years to come, is great feeling. I very much am looking forward to keeping our championship tradition alive in our last season in the Southland Conference and as we transition to the WAC."

He has led the men to a league-record-tying six consecutive Southland Indoor Championships and been named the league's Indoor Coach of the Year the past half dozen seasons (only coach in league history to earn six straight awards). Fox's other honors include the 2008 and '11 U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Indoor South Central Region Coach of the Year and Southland Outdoor Coach of the Year in two of the past four years (2008, ,10). He also represented Team USA as an assistant coach at the 2010 Thorpe Cup (annual United States/Germany decathlon competition).

A former All-America decathlete at the University of Texas, he already has tutored several high-profile athletes at UTSA, including four-time All-American and current NFL player Teddy Williams, three-time All-American Justin Youngblood, two-time All-Americans Devon Bond, Larry Brooks and Richard Garrett Jr., All-Americans Brandon Buteaux and Rhonda Ray, two-time national qualifier Curtis Johnson, four-time Southland Champion Will Vese and 2008 Southland Cross Country, six-time indoor and two-time outdoor league champion Dana Mecke.

Under his watchful eye, Roadrunners student-athletes have broken or tied six conference records and established a total of 36 school marks. They also have won 88 league titles and earned 16 All-America certificates. There has been just as much success in the classroom, as multi-event performer Bryan Wolfe swept Southland Student-Athlete of the Year honors in 2005 and '06, while Mecke has been honored four times (2008 cross country/'09-10 indoor/'10 outdoor) in addition to earning third-team ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-America accolades in 2010.

During the past six years, 72 individuals have qualified for NCAA Championship Preliminary Round competition and 16 have advanced to the national meets.
