UTSA in 10th place after first round of Golfweek Conference Challenge

VAIL, Colo. — UTSA fired an opening-round 304 on Monday and the Roadrunners are tied for 10th place at the Golfweek Conference Challenge.

Sophomore Fabiola Arriaga led the Roadrunners with a 74, which has her sitting in 18th place. The Torreon, Mexico, native shot one-over par on the front nine before coming in at 2-over. Arriaga recorded birdies on Nos. 2, 10 and 18.

Not far behind is senior Summer Batiste, who carded a 75 on the strength of a team-high five birdies. UTSA's team captain shot even par on the front nine with birdies on Nos. 7 and 9 before registering a trio of birds on the back. Batiste will begin play Tuesday in 26th place.

Arriaga and Batiste’s rounds were their lowest of the fall.

Senior Bruna Spengler made her first appearance of the season and shot a 77 to tie for 39th, while junior Paola Valerio’s 78 is good for a 54th-place tie. Sophomore Taylor Newlin rounded out the Roadrunners' scoring an 88 to tie for 88th.

UTSA currently is tied with Georgia State and Kennesaw State, and the trio sits just two strokes behind No. 25 Notre Dame. UC Davis leads the field after posting a 294, while Coastal Carolina’s Kaitlin Higginbotham, Mississippi’s Natalie Gleadall and Pepperdine’s Grace Na all fired 69s to top the individual leaderboard.

The three-day event continues at 11 a.m. (CT) on Tuesday.
