Roadrunners tied for ninth after opening day of UTA/Waterchase Invitational

FORT WORTH — UTSA is tied for ninth place after 36 holes of the season-opening UTA/Waterchase Invitational.

The Roadrunners carded an opening-round 304 on Monday at Waterchase Golf Club (par 72/7,289 yards), but they bounced back to record an 11-over-par 299 in the second 18 during the afternoon. Their 36-hole total of 603 puts them in a tie with Mercer, Southern Mississippi and Texas Wesleyan for ninth place, one stroke behind Southern Illinois in the 19-team field.

Sophomore Ryan Werre posted rounds of 76 and 72 and is tied for 24th at four-over 148. Junior Stanton Tondre is one shot back in a tie for 30th after registering a 149 (74-75), while junior Mitchell Griffin turned in a 150 (76-74), which is good for for 36th.

Redshirt freshman Martin Board and junior Nicko Dodd are tied for 70th (78-78=156) and 85th (81-79=160), respectively, while freshman Reed Stegall is tied for 79th (80-78=158).

Behind individual leader Rafael Becker's five-under 139 (75-64), Wichita State holds the 36-hole lead with a 570 (294-276) and the Shockers are four shots ahead of second-place Sam Houston State (291-283=574).

The final round gets underway at 8 a.m. on Tuesday.
