Adams, Jewasko sweep Southland Conference Player of the Week honors

FRISCO — Sophomore McKenzie Adams and junior Kelsey Jewasko were named Southland Conference Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, the league office announced on Monday. It marks the second time in the last three weeks that UTSA has swept the circuit's weekly awards.

Adams led all players at the Time Warner Cable Texas Invitational with 48 kills (3.69 kps) and a .443 hitting percentage en route to all-tournament honors. The Schertz native added 16 total blocks (1.23 bps) and 14 digs (1.08 dps) in the Roadrunners' three tournament matches.

She opened the week with 16 winners in UTSA's four-set win against SMU. Adams then racked up a season-high 17 kills and recorded nine total blocks against Santa Clara the next morning before netting 15 winners, seven digs and two total blocks against eighth-ranked Texas in the tournament finale. She has appeared in 25 sets for the Roadrunners this season and currently leads the team with an average of 1.32 blocks per frame.

Meanwhile, Jewasko added to her league-leading dig total after collecting 63 saves (4.85 dps). It marked her second award of 2011, as she was honored two weeks ago.

The two-time Southland Libero of the Year picked up 22 in UTSA's victory against the Mustangs. She then collected 24 digs against the Broncos and 17 more versus the Longhorns. Jewasko also contributed to the Roadrunners' offensive attack with 16 assists in the three matches. The San Antonio native has recorded 300 digs in 54 sets this season and her average of 5.56 per set ranks ninth in the country.

UTSA (6-8) returns to action at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday when it opens conference play at Texas State (9-5).
