SAN ANTONIO — UTSA will open its 2011 fall campaign at the UTA/Waterchase Invitational on Monday. The two-day event will be played at Waterchase Golf Club (par 72/7,289 yards) in Fort Worth and the Roadrunners are competing in the tournament for the third consecutive year.
Led by a 62nd-place showing from sophomore Ryan Werre, who carded rounds of 74, 75 and 78 for an 11-over-par 227, UTSA placed 16th at last year’s tournament with a 904 (299-298-307).
Werre, the 2011 Southland Conference Freshman of the Year and third-team all-league selection, leads a group of six returnees from last year’s squad that posted three top-10 finishes, including a season-best fifth-place effort at last October's Kauai Collegiate Invitational. The Redcliff, Alberta, native led the Roadrunners with a 74.69 stroke average in 36 rounds and he capped his debut season by tying for third at the Southland Conference Championship.
Other veterans include juniors Nicko Dodd (76.58 avg. in 2010-11), Mitchell Griffin (77.52) and Taylor Koser and sophomores Xabier Basanez and Eddie DeVane.
Fourth-year head coach John Knauer welcomes three newcomers to his team in the form of junior transfer Stanton Tondre, a Castroville Medina Valley High product who spent the past two seasons at Odessa College, redshirt freshman Martin Board, from Midland High, and freshman Reed Stegall, who hails from San Angelo Central High.
