SAN ANTONIO — Sophomore Nina Herrera's second-place finish helped lead UTSA to its second consecutive meet championship at Friday's Ricardo Romo/Six Flags Fiesta Texas/H-E-B Classic. The Roadrunners won their annual home meet for the second time in the last three seasons.
The reigning Southland Conference Athlete of the Week finished as the top collegian for the second week in a row after covering the 5,000-meter Park West Athletics Complex loop in 17:58.2. Her performance led a UTSA contingent that saw five of its athletes finish in the top nine.
Freshman Carly Kitts (18:21.5) and sophomores Alyssa Diaz (18:24.7), Jessica Bitterly (18:31.9) and Samantha Fish (18:36.6) captured places six through nine, as the Roadrunners, last week's TLU Preview Champion, topped the 10-team field with 27 points. I-35 rival Texas State collected 41 points, which was good for second, while Texas-Pan American was third with 75.
UTSA will be back in action on Monday, Sept. 26, when it travels to Nacogdoches for the Southland Pre-Conference meet.
