Big second half fuels 7-0 victory against Prairie View A&M on Friday night

SAN ANTONIO — UTSA produced six goals in the second frame en route to an easy 7-0 victory against Prairie View A&M in the program's home opener on Friday night.

Freshman Liv Nyhegn put the Roadrunners (2-5) on the board in the 24th minute thanks to a perfect give-and-go pass from sophomore Laylla da Cruz.

However, that would be all the offense UTSA could muster in a stanza that saw it take 16 shots. Two nearly found the back of the net, but sophomore Anka Grotle hit the crossbar in the 21st minute and fellow soph Valentina Lefort hit the right post in the 20 minutes later.

The Lady Panthers (0-8) were on the defensive for much of the half and goalie Bianca Garza recorded six saves to keep the score close at intermission.

Nyhegn made it 2-0 in the 51st minute with a diving header off a cross from junior Lindsay South. It marked the first multi-goal game for the newcomer from Denmark.

Four minutes later, Grotle converted a penalty kick for a 3-0 advantage after sophomore Maria Jose Rojas was brought down inside the 20-yard box.

The barrage continued in the 64th minute when senior Jodi Leroy blasted a shot past Bianca from 25 yards out.

Lefort recorded her first goal of the campaign in the 70th minute, while freshman Anissa Munson and senior Taylor Padia added winners in the final 20 minutes for the final margin.

The UTSA defense did its part and kept the ball away from sophomore goalies Danielle Snyder and Ari Calderon, who combined for three saves in the Roadrunners’ second consecutive shutout.

UTSA will look for its third consecutive victory on Sunday when it hosts UTEP (6-2) at 1 p.m. on Sunday. The Miners defeated Sam Houston State 3-1 on Friday night and are 1-2 against Southland Conference squads this year.
