SAN ANTONIO — UTSA will open its fall season this weekend at the third annual Islanders Open.
The three-day tournament will begin at 5 p.m. on Friday at the new Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center in Corpus Christi.
The event will feature a full 32-player singles draw and a 16-team doubles draw with a consolation round attached to both brackets. The Roadrunners will compete against players from Abilene Christian, Lamar, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Tyler Junior College.
UTSA enters its second season under head coach Jeff Kader. Last spring, the Birds advanced to the Southland Conference Tournament Championship Match before falling to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 4-1. The squad returns four starting singles players from a year ago, including a pair of first-team All-Southland selections in junior Tyler Brown and senior Daniel Moser. Brown, the 2010 Southland Student-Athlete of the Year, led UTSA with 14 wins in singles play a year ago.
