SAN ANTONIO — UTSA will be back in action on Tuesday night when it hosts Prairie View A&M in a 6:30 p.m. match in the Convocation Center.
UTSA (2-4) is looking to build on the momentum following Sunday's sweep of West Virginia. The Roadrunners received a double-double of 12 digs and 11 kills from senior Elise Huksey and freshman Dempsey Thornton added 11 winners. Redshirt junior Kelsey Schwirtlich guided the Birds to a season-best .330 hitting percentage while handing out 34 assists.
Meanwhile, senior Kelsey Jewasko anchored UTSA's defense with 18 digs. Jewasko netted 103 digs (6.87 dps) last week and became the third player in the program's 29-year history to surpass 1,800 digs. The two-time Southland Libero of the Year enters Tuesday's match with 1,818 and currently leads the league with 150 this season.
Both she and junior outside hitter Whitney Walls were named Southland Conference Defensive and Offensive Player of the Week, respectively, on Monday.
Prairie View A&M (0-4) was swept by Houston Baptist on in its last match on Aug. 30. The Lady Panthers dropped their first three contests of the season at the season-opening Long Beach State Mizuno Invitational. Christine Ruckman leads the team with 16 kills (1.33 kps), while Maria Moulaz has recorded 72 assists. Meanwhile, Shanice Faison has collected 30 digs (2.5 dps) to pace the defense.
Tuesday's match marks the 16th meeting between the two programs. UTSA leads the all-time series that dates back to 1989, 15-0, including 9-0 at home. The Roadrunners won the last meeting, 3-1, in Prairie View on Oct. 2, 2009.
