Former Roadrunner Steven Brown named assistant track & field coach

SAN ANTONIO — UTSA Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Aaron Fox announced Wednesday that former Roadrunner Steven Brown has joined his staff as an assistant coach. Brown, whose appointment is effective immediately, will tutor the program’s jumpers and assist with the team’s sprinters in addition to helping with recruiting and other administrative duties.

Brown previously served as a member of Fox’s staff in 2009 when he was the program’s student volunteer coach. UTSA won its fourth consecutive Southland Conference Indoor Championship that season.

“I appreciate and am excited about the opportunity that Coach Fox has given me,” Brown said. “UTSA has always been a second home to me because I had such a great experience as a student-athlete and later as a student assistant coach. My primary goal is to continue to bring success to the program while helping the student-athletes have the best college experience possible.”

A highly-decorated four-year letterwinner from 2005-08, the Mesquite native led the Roadrunners to a total of four Southland Championships (three indoor/one outdoor) during his career, including the program’s first-ever indoor/outdoor sweep in 2008. A two-time Southland Champion and 14-time all-conference performer, he was tabbed the league’s Indoor Athlete of the Year in 2008 after scoring a meet-high 24 points. Brown also was a three-time NCAA All-Midwest Region honoree and he competed in the long jump at the 2006 NCAA Outdoor Championships. He holds the school’s indoor and outdoor long jump records and also ranks among the program’s top five all-time performers in four sprint events (indoor 60m & 200m/outdoor 100m & 200m).

“Steven was a wonderful student-athlete and he did a great job as a volunteer coach two years ago,” said Fox, who is an eighth-time Southland Coach of the Year honoree. “He is a tremendous leader who brings a lot of championship experience to our staff and I’m excited to bring him aboard.”

UTSA will enter the 2012 campaign having won a Southland-record-tying six consecutive indoor titles and it will attempt to break its tie with Lamar (1980-86) at February’s conference meet. The Roadrunners also have won two of the last four league outdoor crowns.
