DALLAS — SMU broke open a close match with a pair of goals in an eight-minute span and UTSA fell to 0-3 on the season after a 2-0 setback at Westcott Field on Friday night.
Kenzie Scovill put the Mustangs (2-1) on the board just minutes before the end of the first half after a flurry of shots in front of the UTSA net resulted in a goal. Her rebound off a shot by Briana Gaines proved to be all SMU needed on the night. It also capped off a half in which the Mustangs outshot the Roadrunners, 12-2.
After the break, SMU added to its lead in the 51st minute when Amanda Burgardt found Mallory Baum on a cross to the middle of the 18-yard box.
UTSA was unable to break through in the final 29 minutes en route to its third defeat in as many outings this season.
Despite allowing a pair of strikes, junior goalkeeper Dacia Webb logged a season-high seven saves.
The Roadrunners will return to the pitch on Sunday when they travel to Waco for a 1 p.m. matchup at Baylor (2-0-1).
