SAN ANTONIO — UTSA unofficially will kick off its 2011 campaign with a scrimmage against St. Mary's on Sunday morning. The Roadrunners and Rattlers will square off at 10 a.m. at Blossom Stadium (click here for map). The contest will be open to the public.
UTSA was picked third (coaches) and fourth (SIDs) in the Southland Conference Preseason Polls that were released on Wednesday. Sixth-year head coach Steve Ballard returns 16 letterwinners from last year’s squad that finished with a 13-8-2 mark and school records for wins, shutouts (10), goals (44), assists (46) and points (134). The record-setting season came to an end at the hands of national No. 2 seed Portland in the program’s first NCAA Tournament match.
The Roadrunners officially open the season at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 19, against 17th-ranked UC Irvine (19-3-2 a year ago) in College Station.
