SAN ANTONIO — UTSA head coach Brooks Thompson announced Friday that the men’s basketball team will take a nine-day trip to Australia in August to play five exhibition games against teams from the country’s top two leagues.
The Roadrunners will depart San Antonio on Wednesday, Aug. 10, and arrive in Brisbane, the capital and largest city in the state of Queensland, two days later due to crossing the International Date Line. From there, the travel party will take a sightseeing tour of Brisbane and then bus to Gold Coast, a coastal city located approximately one hour south of Brisbane. The team will headquarter in Gold Coast, which also is home to Surfers Paradise, for two days and play a pair of games in the area on Aug. 13-14.
On Aug. 15, UTSA will depart for Cairns, the hometown of sophomore forward Jeromie Hill, the 2011 Southland Conference Freshman of the Year. The team will take in the local sights, including a trip to the Great Barrier Reef, before playing the third contest of the trip on Aug. 17.
The following day, the Roadrunners will board a plane for Sydney, the capital of New South Wales. UTSA will visit the famous Opera House and Harbour Bridge and play its final two fixtures of the trip while in Australia’s largest city before departing for San Antonio on Aug. 21.
A complete schedule of opponents and game times will be posted later this summer.
UTSA will face teams from the National Basketball League (NBL) and Australia Basketball Association (ABA). Australia, which also is the home country of sophomore forward Igor Nujic (Perth), is 14 hours ahead of the Central Time Zone.
