SAN ANTONIO — Senior Ryan Hutson belted a pair of two-run homers, but it was not enough for UTSA to salvage Sunday's series finale against No. 25 Texas State and the Bobcats completed a three-game sweep with a 7-6 victory at Roadrunner Field.
Texas State (31-16, 20-7 SLC) used a five-run second for the second day in a row to build what proved to be an insurmountable early lead.
Hutson helped the Roadrunners (22-27, 13-14 SLC) pull within one after hitting his first home run in the fourth and the Round Rock native did the same with his blast four innings later.
Junior Jason Mohn led off the ninth with a single and was lifted for senior pinch runner Tommy Vukovich, who moved into scoring position after redshirt freshman RJ Perucki laid down a sacrifice bunt. However, the threat ended when Jeff McVaney forced freshman Riley Good to ground out followed by striking out junior Matthew James for his third save of the weekend and sixth of the season.
Colton Turner (7-1) gave up four runs on five hits, walked three and fanned six in 5.1 innings for the win.
Junior Jordan Langley (4-4), who was chased from the contest with one down in the third, took the loss. He surrendered five runs on a half dozen hits and walked a pair.
Hutson responded to a move down to the No. 6 spot in the order with his 42nd and 43rd career round-trippers (No. 2 UTSA history). Senior Tyler Carpenter finished a double shy of a cycle after collecting three hits, including a solo home run with two outs in the opening frame. It was his third long ball of the year and 18th of his career.
Kyle Kubitza was 3-for-4, including a grand slam to cap the five-run second, and Casey Kalenkosky was 1-for-4 with his Southland-leading 17th home run of the season to pace the Bobcats at the plate.
After falling behind 5-1, the Roadrunners used a three-run fourth to pull within one.
Carpenter led off the inning with a triple and scored on sophomore Ryan Dalton's sacrifice fly to right. After junior Casey Selsor doubled to left, Hutson hammered a 1-0 offering from Turner over the wall in left.
Texas State increased its advantage to three in the seventh after Kalenkosky hit a two-run homer off freshman reliever Michael Kraft.
UTSA will return to action next weekend when it travels to Lake Charles, La., for a three-game series at McNeese State (24-26, 12-15 SLC).
