Two-run homers fuel UTSA's 8-5 win at Houston

HOUSTON — Three two-run homers helped UTSA to an 8-5 victory at Houston on Tuesday night at Cougar Field.

Senior Ryan Hutson and sophomores Ryan Dalton and Daniel Rockett all went deep for the Roadrunners, who improved to 24-29 on the season.

UTSA, which scored all eight of its runs during the middle three innings, broke a 4-4 tie in the fifth when senior Tyler Carpenter beat out an infield hit and that allowed redshirt freshman RJ Perucki to cross the plate.

Dalton lined a two-run homer over the left field wall one frame later and Rockett later scored on a fielding error to put the game out of reach.

Senior Taylor Walton (6-6) held the Cougars scoreless on one hit over 3.1 panels of relief.

Travis Jenkins (0-1) took the loss after surrendering the final four runs.

Houston (24-28) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the second after stringing together four consecutive hits, including a solo homer by Joel Ansley.

Two innings later, the Roadrunners answered with a pair of two-run bombs by Hutson and Rockett.

The Cougars tied the contest in the bottom of the frame when John Cannon swatted a two-run big fly to left. Four batters later, Houston chased junior Jordan Langley from the contest after loading the bases. However, Walton came on to induce a ground out off the bat of Caleb Ramsey to thwart the rally.

Codey Morehouse tripled to lead off the ninth and later scored, but senior reliever Kevin Clarke closed out the contest with back-to-back fly outs.

UTSA will host Central Arkansas (23-27, 12-18 SLC) in a three-game series that begins Thursday night at Roadrunner Field.
