UTSA opens weekend with 9-4 triumph at Stephen F. Austin

NACOGDOCHES — The top three hitters in UTSA's lineup recorded three hits apiece and junior Casey Selsor pitched seven solid innings to lead the Roadrunners to a 9-4 victory at Stephen F. Austin on Friday.

UTSA (12-20, 5-8 SLC) scored in each of the final five innings to win the Southland Conference series opener.

Senior Ryan Hutson, junior Matthew James and freshman Riley Good accounted for nine of the Birds' 14 hits. Hutson extended his hitting streak to 15 games, while Good reached based for the 23rd consecutive game.

Selsor (2-3) notched his third quality start of the year after allowing three runs on nine hits in seven-plus innings. He struck out four and walked just one.

Tyler Herriage (1-4) was saddled with the loss for the Lumberjacks (21-10, 9-4 SLC). He gave up five runs (four earned) on nine hits on in his six-plus frames.

UTSA broke the scoring seal in the fifth when freshman Mike Warren produced an RBI single. Redshirt freshman RJ Perucki hit a sacrifice fly to center later in the panel to plate Warren and give the Roadrunners a 2-0 edge.

After the Roadrunners added another run in the sixth, SFA pushed across a pair in the bottom of the inning.

UTSA answered with a two-spot in the seventh when junior Jason Mohn scored on a wild pitch and Good produced a run-scoring single.

The Lumberjacks scored twice in the eighth to pull within two, but the Birds plated three insurance runs in the ninth to put the game out of reach.

After back-to-back singles by Good and James, Hutson cleared the bases with a double down the left-field line. Two batters later, senior Tyler Carpenter capped the scoring with a two-bagger of his own to bring Hutson across the dish with UTSA's ninth run of the afternoon.

The series continues at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
