Texas Tech sweeps Tuesday twinbill from UTSA

SAN ANGELO — UTSA dropped both ends of a doubleheader against Texas Tech on Tuesday at Foster Field.

Texas Tech (19-11) took the opener, 8-2, and completed the sweep with an 11-6 victory in the nightcap.

Freshman Riley Good paced the Roadrunners (11-20) at the plate by going 5-for-8 with a double, two RBIs and a pair of runs scored in the twinbill. Senior Ryan Hutson was 4-for-9 with two RBIs and redshirt freshman RJ Perucki went 3-for-7 with a pair of doubles and three runs scored.

UTSA returns to action this weekend at Stephen F. Austin (21-9, 9-3 SLC).


Texas Tech completes sweep with 11-6 win in nightcap

SAN ANGELO — Texas Tech broke open a 5-5 game in the bottom of the seventh with a five-spot and the Red Raiders completed a doubleheader sweep of UTSA with an 11-6 victory on Tuesday at Foster Field.

UTSA (11-20) erased a 5-0 deficit and tied the contest in the sixth. However, Texas Tech (19-11) answered an inning later with five runs to put the nightcap out of reach.

John Neely (7-0) struck out six in 3.2 scoreless innings of relief for the victory, while freshman Michael Kraft (1-2) was charged with the loss after giving up two runs on six hits in his five panels of relief work.

Freshman Riley Good paced UTSA's 13-hit attack with a 4-for-4 performance at the plate and senior Ryan Hutson added three hits and a pair of RBIs.

The Red Raiders registered 16 hits, including three apiece from Kelby Tomlinson and Barrett Barnes. Meanwhile, Bo Altobelli was 2-for-4 with three RBIs.

Texas Tech jumped out to a 5-0 lead after scoring a pair in the opening frame and three more in the second, which chased freshman starter Matt Sims from the contest.

Junior Matthew James drove in the Roadrunners' first run with a triple to center and he came home a batter later when Hutson singled through the left side.

The Roadrunners pulled within two in the fifth when Hutson drove in another run, this time on a double to center.

Back-to-back two-baggers by redshirt freshman RJ Perucki and junior Colby Braddock in the sixth tied the game.

Each team added a single run in the eighth.

Good stroked a run-scoring in the top of the panel, but Barnes led off the bottom of the stanza with a solo home run to left.


Five-run fourth sinks Roadrunners in opener against Texas Tech

SAN ANGELO — A five-run fourth inning and excellent relief pitching from Brennan Stewart allowed Texas Tech to post an 8-2 victory against UTSA in the opening game of Tuesday's doubleheader at Foster Field.

Texas Tech (18-11) sent all nine batters to the plate in the decisive fourth, which included a half dozen hits and a pair of errors by the Roadrunners (11-19).

Stewart (1-0) retired the first 17 batters he faced before giving up a single to junior Casey Selsor and he went on to strike out seven in 6.1 scorless frames.

Junior Jordan Langley (2-3) took the loss after allowing seven runs (five earned) on eight hits with three strikeouts over 3.1 innings of work.

Reid Redman paced Texas Tech with a pair of hits and three RBIs.

Selsor had a two hits for UTSA, while freshman Riley Good and junior Matthew James each drove in a run.

Texas Tech struck first in the second after Stephen Hagen reached on an error by sophomore Ryan Dalton and, three batters later, Kelby Tomlinson brought Hagen home with a double to left center. The Red Raiders doubled their lead with a run-scoring single by Redman later in the inning.

UTSA answered one frame later when Good doubled home redshirt freshman RJ Perucki from first and junior Matthew James followed with a base hit that allowed Good to come home with the tying run.

Texas Tech scored its final run in the eighth when David Paiz crossed the plate on a wild pitch by senior Zach Calhoon.
