THIBODUAX, La. — Seth Webster hurled a complete-game eight-hitter to lead Nicholls to a 4-1 victory against UTSA in Friday's series opener at Ray E. Didier Field.
The Roadrunners (19-24, 11-11 SLC) out-hit the Colonels (21-21, 10-12 SLC) but committed three errors in the one-hour, 48-minute contest.
Webster (4-2) limited UTSA to just an unearned run and struck out seven in his fourth complete game of the season.
Junior Casey Selsor (4-4) was handed the loss despite fanning a career-high 10 batters in the complete-game loss. The San Antonio native allowed four runs on a half dozen hits and walked a pair.
UTSA grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the third after a throwing miscue allowed sophomore Jake Wood to score from third.
The Colonels answered with three two-out runs an inning later to take the lead for good, which included a two-run single by Austin Flores.
A pair of Roadrunners errors on a grounder in the fifth helped Nicholls produce the final run of the evening.
Junior Matthew James was unable to handle a grounder off the bat of Chase Jamarillo and that allowed Bear Comer to advance to second. Redshirt freshman RJ Perucki then picked up the ball and threw widly to first, which allowed Comer to move up to third. A batter later, Jeremy Hill grounded out to James, which pushed Comer across the plate.
The series continues at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
