SAN MARCOS — Texas State slugged three home runs and held UTSA to just three hits to avoid a series sweep with a 4-1 victory on Saturday afternoon at Bobcat Stadium.
Despite the loss, the Roadrunners (27-25, 17-13 SLC) won their first series in San Marcos since 1996 and now have won their last three Southland Conference sets overall.
Haley Lemons put the Bobcats (27-22, 18-9 SLC) ahead in the third with a solo homer down the right-field line. The advantage grew to four two frames later when Chandler Hall delivered a lead-off homer to right and that was followed by Jenna Emery’s two-run shot to left three batters later.
That was enough for Hall (13-14), who went the distance and, at one point, retired 12 consecutive batters.
The Roadrunners had one final chance in the seventh and ended Hall’s hopes of a shutout with a pair of hits and senior Danye Holmes drove in the only run on a ground out.
Holmes (5-4) gave up a run on four hits in her four innings of work. She struck out a season-high five and walked three.
UTSA saw its regular season come to an end with a four-game improvement from last season, including a two-game upgrade in Southland play.
The Roadrunners, currently fourth in the league standings, will wait to see their final position on the league ledger, as the rest of the conference still has one weekend to play before the top six squads advance to the Southland Tournament, which is slated for May 12-15 in Huntsville.
