UT Arlington rallies late to finish series sweep of UTSA, 4-1

SAN ANTONIO — UT Arlington scored three runs in the top of the seventh and the Mavericks finished of a weekend sweep of UTSA with a 4-1 victory on Sunday at Roadrunner Field.

Senior Kristin Kappler had a career-high three hits to lead the Roadrunners (14-20, 8-10 SLC). Meanwhile, Rebbecca Collom, Charne Office and Teri Lyles finished with a pair of hits for the Mavericks (26-12, 13-2 SLC).

Senior Danye Holmes started strong for UTSA, allowing just one hit the first time through the UT Arlington lineup.

However, Collom put the Mavs on the board in the third with a home run to center. The blast put her in a tie with freshman Molly Fichtner for the conference lead at nine homers.

The Birds tied things up in the fourth with a two-out rally.

Kappler singled up the middle and moved to second on an illegal pitch. Senior Emily Humpal provided the big hit with an infield single, which plated Kappler and knotted the score at one. Her hard smash glanced off the glove of a lunging Taylor Zink at third base and the ball caromed into short left field.

However, that was all the offense UTSA mustered off Collins, who improved to 15-3 on the season with the complete-game win.

UTA tallied three runs with two outs in the seventh off Humpal.

With runners on first and second, Courtney Zink singled to left to plate Kersti Rowan. Two batters later, Office’s bases-loaded single to left plated a pair for the margin.

The Roadrunners managed one hit in the seventh off the bat of freshman Jori Fox, but they could not score.

Humpal (5-3) coughed up four runs (three earned) on five hits and a walk in her two innings of relief. Holmes allowed a run on just three hits and struck out three in five innings.

UTSA will wrap up its seven-game home stand on Tuesday when it faces Texas Southern (17-20) in a 3 p.m. doubleheader.
