Mavericks sweep doubleheader from UTSA on Saturday

SAN ANTONIO — UT Arlington pounded out 24 hits to take both ends of a doubleheader UTSA, 3-2 and 11-3, on Saturday afternoon at Roadrunner Field.

Senior Danye Holmes led the offense by going 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs, while fellow senior Emily Humpal tied a season high with eight strikeouts for the Roadrunners (14-19, 8-9 SLC).

Erica LeFlore hit a two-run homer in the first inning of both games to give the Mavericks (25-12, 12-2 SLC) an early lead.

Freshman Molly Fichtner hit her Southland Conference-leading ninth home run of the season in the third panel of the opener to cut the deficit in half and, a frame later, senior Carrie Monroe worked a bases loaded walk to tie the score.

However, Rebbecca Collom led off the seventh with her eighth long ball of the season to put UTA in front for good.

Callie Collins (14-3) retired the Roadrunners in order in the bottom of the stanza to notch her conference-leading 14th win of the year. She allowed two runs on five hits, walked six and struck out seven in the complete-game effort.

Humpal (5-2) surrendered three runs on 11 hits.

In game two, Holmes drove in a pair of runs in the first to tie the score and UTSA took the lead on a sacrifice fly from senior Kristin Kappler two innings later.

However, the lead was short-lived, as UT Arlington batted around in the fourth and put nine runs on the board. The first nine batters reached base with six consecutive hits and three walks.

The Roadrunners were unable to answer and fell victim to the run-rule.

Freshman Katy Akins (2-3) gave up seven runs on 10 hits in three innings of work, while Teri Lyles (10-8) allowed three runs (two earned) in five stanzas.

UTSA will look to avoid the series sweep on Sunday at noon.
