SAN ANTONIO — UTSA tied a season high with 19 hits and rolled past Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 13-6, in Friday's opening contest of a three-game Southland Conference series at Roadrunner Field.
The Roadrunners (9-18, 2-8 SLC) used a seven-run fifth inning to put an end to Islanders' (20-9, 6-4 SLC) nation-leading eight-game win streak.
All nine members of UTSA's starting lineup registered at least one hit.
Senior Ryan Hutson led the offensive explosion with four, including his 41st career home run, and he added a season-high four RBIs. Meanwhile, freshman Riley Good reached base for the 18th consecutive outing after going 3-for-5. Junior Jason Mohn and sophomore Ryan Dalton each chipped in with two hits and a pair of RBIs.
UTSA opened up a 4-0 lead in the first after the first five batters recorded a hit against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi starting pitcher Todd Simko.
The Birds tacked on a pair in the next frame when Mohn scored on a passed ball and Hutson produced an run-scoring single.
The Islanders picked up their first run in the fourth and cut the lead in half after plating a pair in the fifth.
However, UTSA busted open the contest in the bottom of the panel with a seven-spot. Mohn and Hutson each belted two-run homers and the Roadrunners tallied three triples in the inning to pull away.
Junior Casey Selsor (1-3) went seven innings and picked up his first win of the spring. He allowed six runs (five earned) on 11 hits and a pair of walks to go along with six strikeouts.
Simko (5-3) yielded eight marks (seven earned) on a dozen hits over his 4.2 frames.
Matt Holland was 2-for-4 with a long ball and three RBIs to pace the Islanders.
The series continues at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
