Northwestern State rallies past Roadrunners in extra innings, 13-11

SAN ANTONIO — Northwestern State overcame an early six-run deficit, tied the game with a run in the ninth and added three more an inning later en route to a 13-11 victory against UTSA on Sunday at Roadrunner Field.

The Demons (13-24, 4-14 SLC) tied the contest at 10 in the ninth when Nick Hinojos singledoff senior reliever Kevin Clarke, which allowed pinch runner Ray Frias to score from second. Clarke (0-4) went on to allow three more runs (one earned) in the 10th.

The Roadrunners (16-22, 8-10 SLC) scored a run with two down in the bottom of the panel when sophomore Ryan Dalton doubled, but Mason Melotakis recorded the final out with runners on second and third to pick up his second save of the season. UTSA stranded 11 runners on the base paths.

Hinojos went 4-for-6 with six RBIs, including a three-run home run, while Justin Martinez finished with three hits, including a pair of bombs, and three RBIs. Martinez' first long ball came on the first pitch of the game and his second led off the 10th.

Dustin Northcott (2-5) pitched seven innings of relief for the win. He gave up three runs on seven hits, walked four and struck out six after coming in for starter Colin Bear with two down in the third.

After the Demons opened the contest with a pair of runs in the first, UTSA tallied four in both the second and third to take an 8-2 lead.

Northwestern State pulled within four in the top of the fourth after Omar Garcia launched a two-run homer to left.

UTSA increased its lead to five in the bottom of the frame when Dalton left the park for the third time in the series.

Northwestern State put up a five-spot in the sixth to draw even, but junior Casey Selsor put the Roadrunners back on top with his first circuit clout of the season in the bottom of the frame.

Selsor was 3-for-5 with three runs scored, two RBIs and three stolen bases, while sophomore Daniel Rockett added three hits.

UTSA returns to action on Thursday in the opener of a three-game home series with Lamar (22-16, 9-9 SLC).
