UTSA gets past St. Edward's, 13-6

SAN ANTONIO — A five-run fifth inning fueled UTSA's 13-6 comeback victory against St. Edward's on Tuesday night at Roadrunner Field.

Trailing by a run in the fifth, the Roadrunners (14-21) sent 10 batters to the plate during the decisive frame to take a lead they would not relinquish.

Stephen Johnson (4-4) started the fifth for the Hilltoppers (17-17) and issued back-to-back free passes before being chased from the game and those two base runners eventually came around to score.

Freshman Matt Sims (1-0) allowed two runs on four hits with a strikeout in 1.2 relief innings, while junior Samuel Cordero fanned three over the final three panels for the first save of his UTSA career.

Sophomore Jake Wood was 3-for-4 and tied a career-high with five RBIs to pace the UTSA's 11-hit attack.

St. Edward's jumped out to a three-run lead in the opening frame after collecting four hits and scoring a pair of unearned runs following a Roadrunners error.

Wood's two-run single with two down in the next stanza pulled the Birds within one. UTSA then tied the contest in the fourth when junior Casey Selsor scored on a wild pitch.

The Hilltoppers regained the lead in the fifth when Daniel Homann produced an RBI double, which scored Dylan Schuch.

UTSA went on to add a pair of runs in the sixth to extend their lead to 10-4.

The Hilltoppers recorded back-to-back singles in the seventh before Adam Shank's base hit cleared the bases.

UTSA answered with a single mark in the bottom of the frame on senior Ryan Hutson's sacrifice fly to center. The Roadrunners added two more insurance runs in the following inning.

The Roadrunners return to action this weekend when they host Northwestern State (11-22, 3-12 SLC) in a three-game series at the Bird Bath.
