Batiste leads UTSA to third-place finish at Baylor Invitational

WACO — Junior Summer Batiste shot a final-round 75 to tie for seventh place on the individual leaderboard and she helped lead UTSA to third on Tuesday at the Baylor Invitational.

The Spring native recorded four birdies on the day to match her total from the first two rounds combined and, in doing so, claimed her fourth career top 10 finish and first of the season. She finished the two-day tournament with a 225 (74-76-75).

Freshman Taylor Newlin finished in a tie for 11th with a 227 after firing a 79 in the third round. It was her best placing since a tie for fourth at the Chip-N Club Invitational (Sept. 13-14).

Sophomore Paola Valerio turned in her best round of the tournament, a 73, to move up to a tie for 21st with a 230 (78-79-73).

Freshman Fabiola Arriaga and junior Shannon Jungman both improved their scores in the final 18, recording a 75 and a 79, respectively. Arriaga moved up to a tie for 35th with a 235 (80-80-75), while Jungman finished tied for 56th with a 239 (80-80-79).

Texas Tech took the team title with an 899 (309-295-295) and was led by Alex Gibson, who topped the individual standings with a 219 (78-70-71).

The Roadrunners finished behind the Lady Raiders and North Texas and ahead of No. 28 Oklahoma and host Baylor, as well as Southland Conference foes Texas State and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

UTSA will be in search of its first-ever league title and NCAA Regional appearance when it returns to action next week at the Southland Championship. The three-day tournament begins on Monday, April 18, at the Corpus Christi Country Club.
