UTSA, Newlin in second place after first two rounds of Baylor Invitational

WACO — Freshman Taylor Newlin carded six birdies en route to a second-place 148 (77-71) and she led UTSA to the No. 2 spot on the team leaderboard after Monday's first two rounds of the Baylor Invitational.

After an opening-round 77, the Frisco native shot four-under-par on the front nine in round two and finished with a 71, a mark that tied Texas State’s Gabby de Reuck for lowest of the tournament. She recorded birdies on Nos. 1, 3, 4, 7 and 18.

Junior Summer Batiste joined Newlin in the top 10 with a 150 (74-76), which was good for a tie for sixth with a total of four birdies. Meanwhile, sophomore Paola Valerio’s 157 (78-79) put her in a tie for 30th. Freshman Fabiola Arriaga and junior Shannon Jungman each shot 160 (80-80) to tie for 44th.

The Roadrunners, who shot an opening-day 605 (309-306), trail only Texas Tech (309-295=604) in the team standings. Baylor's Chelsey Cothran leads the field with a 36-hole score of 147 (73-74), which is just one shot better than Newlin and the Texas Tech's Alex Gibson.

UTSA leads fellow Southland Conference foes Texas State and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi as well as with No. 28 Oklahoma, Nebraska, Baylor, Kansas and Missouri from the Big 12.

The Roadrunners will look to claim the team title on Tuesday when the tournament concludes with the final 18 holes.
