Roadrunners win rubber game at Stephen F. Austin, 7-4

NACOGDOCHES — UTSA won its second consecutive Southland Conference series after hanging on for a 7-4 victory at Stephen F. Austin on Sunday.

The Roadrunners (13-21, 6-9 SLC) jumped out to a 6-0 lead and staved off a late charge by the Lumberjacks (22-11, 10-5 SLC), who scored a run in the seventh and three in the eighth to pull within two.

UTSA added an insurance mark in the ninth when sophomore Ryan Dalton dowubled down the left-field line, which allowed junior Casey Selsor to score from second base.

Senior Kevin Clarke, who inherited a pair of runners in the eighth, picked up his second save of the season after holding SFA scoreless in the final frame. He allowed one hit and struck out two.

Junior Jordan Langley (3-3) served up just three hits over six scoreless panels, while walking three and fanning one, to pick up the win.

UTSA opened the scoring in the second when sophomore Daniel Rockett's grounder was misplayed by Stephen F. Austin shortstop Hunter Dozier, which allowed senior Tyler Carpenter to score from second.

The Roadrunners added three runs in the fourth and the Lumberjacks committed an error in the seventh that led to a pair of unearned runs, giving the Birds a 6-0 advantage.

Rockett and Selsor both were 2-for-5 and Rockett drove in two.

Zack Taylor (3-2) was handed the loss after allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits with four walks and three strikeouts over four-plus innings of work.

UTSA opens an eight-game home stand at 6 p.m. on Tuesday against St. Edward's (17-16).
