HAMMOND, La. — Megan Gomez accounted for all of Southeastern Louisiana’s offense with a pair of home runs to lead the Lady Lions to a 4-1 victory in the series finale against UTSA on Sunday.
Senior Carrie Monroe led the Roadrunners (17-22, 9-12 SLC) with a perfect 3-for-3 day at the plate including her second homer of the spring.
Monroe quickly put UTSA on the board in the opening inning when she deposited Kenna Terry’s 2-1 pitch over the fence in left. It marked the Roadrunners' first lead-off long ball since Rudi Cantu did so against Texas in game two of a doubleheader on March 30, 2010.
However, the Lady Lions (16-19, 6-9 SLC) struck back in the third with a home run its own.
Kelsey Nichols led off the frame with a walk and another free pass to Katie Matthews set the table for Gomez, who took the eighth pitch of the at-bat out to left for a 3-1 lead.
UTSA threatened in the fifth when freshman Siera Sproul singled up the middle, but she was thrown out trying to go from first to third on Monroe’s third hit of the day. Junior Ashley Kappler followed with a deep fly ball to center field that ended the rally.
The Lady Lions capitalized on the missed opportunity and extended their lead in the fifth.
Sophomore reliever Haylee Staton retired the first five hitters she faced before Gomez notched her second bomb of the day on the first pitch she saw.
That was plenty for Terry (4-3), who recorded her second win of the series with a complete-game effort. She allowed just one run on a half dozen hits, walked one and struck out three.
Senior Emily Humpal (7-4) took the loss after surrendering three runs on three hits with four walks and a trio of punchouts.
UTSA returns to the diamond on Wednesday when it plays a doubleheader at Houston Baptist (23-18). First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Husky Field.
