NEW ORLEANS, La. — The postseason honors continue to come in for the UTSA men's track & field program, as ninth-year head coach Aaron Fox was named the South Central Region Coach of the Year, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced on Monday. It is the second time in the last four seasons that Fox has earned the honor.
"I am honored to receive this award," Fox said. "To be voted by my peers makes it that much more special. It's a great individual honor, but it couldn't have happened without the hard work of my student-athletes and assistant coaches. They deserve just as much credit for this award."
Fox recently collected Southland Conference Indoor Coach of the Year accolades for the sixth year in a row, which extended his record run of consecutive awards. He led the Roadrunners to a league-record-tying sixth straight championship, which matched Lamar's 26-year-old mark set from 1980-85. Not only did UTSA post a 42-point victory over runner-up UT Arlington, the league's most-lopsided margin 11 years, but the the Flagstaff, Ariz., native also coached a record-tying six conference champions —sophomore Keith Benford (high jump), senior Devon Bond (triple jump), junior Albert Cardenas (mile), sophomore Richard Garrett Jr. (shot put), sophomore Taylor Reed (pole vault) and sophomore Tyler Williamson (long jump). A fixture on UTSA's track & field coaching staff for 11 years, Fox now has mentored 32 of the program's 56 individual league champions since taking over as head coach in 2003. The Birds finished the meet with 153 points, which was the second-highest total in the 32-year history of the event (Lamar/164 in 1983).
In each of the country’s nine regions, the USTFCCCA selected the top men’s and women’s track athlete, field performer, head coach and assistant coach for the 2011 NCAA Division I indoor season.
