LAKE CHARLES, La. — Freshman Siera Sproul hit her first collegiate home run and senior Danye Holmes tossed a complete-game shutout in leading UTSA to a 3-0 victory in Sunday's series finale at Cowgirl Diamond.
The Roadrunners (12-17, 8-7 SLC) jumped ahead in the third on freshman Molly Fichtner's double and never looked back behind an impressive performance by Holmes (3-2), who allowed just four singles.
The Cowgirls (13-20, 7-8 SLC) threatened in the bottom half of the frame after putting runners on second and third, but Holmes got Lindsey Langer to pop up to quell the rally.
UTSA's southpaw hurler cruised from there and benefitted from Sproul’s first collegiate home run, a two-run shot in the sixth, which gave the Birds a 3-0 lead.
Junior Nikki Goff walked and stood on first with two outs before the Liberty Hill native took Kayla Shepherd (8-11) deep to give Holmes more than enough support to pick up her third win of the season.
McNeese recorded a pair of hits in the seventh, but Dani Price lined into a double play to end the contest.
UTSA will open a seven-game home stand on Wednesday, March 30, with a 2 p.m. doubleheader against Houston Baptist (21-14), which clinched the Great West Conference Regular Season Championship this afternoon.
