Early runs too much for UTSA in 5-1 setback at Sam Houston State

HUNTSVILLE — Sam Houston State scored four runs in the first two innings and cruised to a 5-1 victory against UTSA on Sunday at Don Sanders Stadium.

The Bearkats (17-8, 4-5 SLC) completed the weekend series sweep and sent the Roadrunners (7-18, 1-8 SLC) to their 11th loss in the last 12 contests.

Sam Houston State jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening stanza and it doubled the advantage an inning latter when Doug Oney stroked run-scoring double to left before later scoring on a ground out to third base.

UTSA managed its only mark in the top of the third.

Senior Ryan Hutson produced a run-scoring single to plate junior Matthew James, who had doubled to left center.

The Bearkats tacked on an insurance run in the seventh when Oney scored on a single to center by Ryan Mooney.

Brandon Kimbrel (2-1) picked up the win after limiting UTSA to one run on seven hits in 7.1 innings. He struck out three and walked four.

Freshman Blake Denman (0-2) took the loss after allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits and three walks in 4.1 panels of work.

Hutson and freshman Mike Warren each tallied a pair of hits to pace the Roadrunners. Freshman Riley Good was 1-for-4 and he reached base safely for the 16th consecutive game.

UTSA returns to action on Tuesday night at Baylor (16-8). First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Baylor Ballpark.
