Sam Houston State tops UTSA, 6-3

HUNTSVILLE — Sam Houston State pounded out 12 hits and produced three two-run innings to claim a 6-3 victory against UTSA on Saturday afternoon at Don Sanders Stadium. It marked the ninth loss in the last 10 games for the Roadrunners, who now are 7-17 overall and 1-7 in Southland Conference play.

After the Roadrunners claimed on early 1-0 lead in the second inning, the Bearkats (16-8, 3-5 SLC) posted two runs in the third, fourth and fifth frames to take a commanding 6-1 advantage.

UTSA managed just two more runs to pull within three later in the contest, but it was too little, too late.

A trio of Sam Houston State pitchers limited UTSA to a half dozen hits during the contest.

Starter Brent Powers (3-2) earned the win after allowing only a pair of runs on five hits to go along with seven strikeouts in six innings of work. Michael Burchett earned his fourth save of the spring after hurling 2.2 scoreless panels.

Senior starter Taylor Walton (3-3) took the loss after surrendering five runs on eight hits and four walks in four innings.

Freshman Riley Good tallied a pair of hits, including a triple, to pace the Roadrunners. Junior Jason Mohn hit a pinch-hit solo home run in the seventh and senior Ryan Hutson tallied an RBI triple in the second.

Greg Olson and Ryan Mooney each registered three hits to lead the Sam Houston State offensive attack.

UTSA got in the board in the second when a sacrifice fly by sophomore Daniel Rockett brought home sophomore Ryan Dalton.

The Bearkats answered in the bottom of third in the first of three consecutive innings with two runs.

After Sam Houston State received two run-scoring base hits in both the third and fourth, Kevin Miller singled to center, which plated a pair to give the Bearkats a five-run lead.

The Roadrunners cut the lead to 6-2 in the sixth when Hutson's triple to center drove in Good, who reached earlier on a triple of his own.

The series concludes at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
