LAREDO — Led by a 44th-place showing from freshman Ryan Werre, the UTSA men’s golf team finished 18th at this weekend'sBorder Olympics.
Werre fired rounds of even-par 72 and a pair of two-over 74s at the Laredo Country Club (par 72, 7,125 yards) and finished at four-over 220 in the 54-hole event.
The Roadrunners turned in scorecards of 308, 296 and 301 and placed 18th with a 905 in their first action since Feb. 22.
Arkansas won the team title at 32-under 832, followed by Oklahoma (837) and Baylor (846). Rice’s Michael Whitehead won the individual crown with a 19-under 68-67-62=197.
Senior Lewis Chong tied for 85th with a 227 (75-76-76), while sophomore Nicko Dodd tied for 92nd with a 230 (81-72-77). Junior Austin Struble tied for 96th (83-74-76=233) and sophomore Mitchell Griffin was 98th (80-81-75=236).
UTSA returns to the course next week at the Morris Williams Intercollegiate in Austin. The two-day tournament tees off on Monday, April 4.
