UTSA, Rice to play home-and-home series in 2012-13

SAN ANTONIO — UTSA officials announced Monday that they have agreed to a home-and-home series with Rice.

The Roadrunners and Owls, members of Conference USA, will meet on Oct. 13, 2012, at Rice Stadium in Houston and again on Oct. 12, 2013, at the Alamodome.

This marks the 10th contract UTSA has unveiled with an NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) school, joining series with Arizona, Arizona State, Baylor, Colorado State, Houston, Kansas State, Louisiana Tech, Oklahoma State and Virginia. As a result of the Rice game in 2012, the Roadrunners will drop the road date with Stephen F. Austin for the same day from the schedule.

UTSA will play its inaugural season this fall, which includes home games against Northeastern State (Sept. 3), McMurry (Sept. 10), Bacone College (Sept. 24), South Alabama (Oct. 8), Georgia State (Oct. 29) and Minot State (Nov. 19). UTSA has road dates at Southern Utah (Sept. 17), Sam Houston State (Oct. 1), UC Davis (Oct. 15) and McNeese State (Nov. 12).

The University of Texas System Board of Regents unanimously approved UTSA’s Athletics Initiative Business Plan on Dec. 18, 2008, which granted the university permission to add a football program. On March 6, 2009, Coker was introduced as the program’s first-ever head coach.

UTSA will begin play as an NCAA Football Championship Subdivision Independent in 2011. The Roadrunners then will join the Western Athletic Conference in 2012 (conference schedule to be determined), then will comply with FBS standards during the 2013 season before seeking full FBS membership and bowl eligibility in 2014.

Fans wishing to place orders for season tickets can do so online at goUTSA.com or by calling the ticket office at (210) 458-UTSA (8872). The deadline to be a part of the initial seat selection process is April 15.
