COLLEGE STATION — Sophomore Richard Garrett Jr. became the seventh All-American in UTSA men's track & field history when he earned second-team accolades with his 15th-place finish in the shot put on Friday at the NCAA Championships.
The Garland native put the implement 58-0 ½ (17.69m) on his first attempt of the night and was unable improve upon that on his subsequent two attempts, therefore, he did not advance to the finals.
Garrett Jr., who was this season's Southland Conference Outstanding Field Performer, joined Devon Bond (2010 outdoor), Larry Brooks (2007 indoor & outdoor), Brandon Buteaux (2005 indoor), Leonard Byrd (1995-97 outdoor), Teddy Williams (2009-10 indoor/2008 & '10 outdoor) and Justin Youngblood (2002 outdoor/2004 indoor & outdoor) on the Roadrunners' all-time All-America list. His honor marks sixth time in the last eight years that a UTSA student-athlete has earned a certificate at the indoor national meet.
The Roadrunners open the outdoor season next weekend at the Texas Southern Relays. The two-day meet begins on Friday, March 18, in Houston.
