Roadrunners drop pair of close games to open Southland Conference play

CORPUS CHRISTI — UTSA managed just seven hits and failed to produce a run in a pair of shutout losses on Tuesday at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the Southland Conference openers for both programs.

The Roadrunners (2-11, 0-2 SLC) dropped the first game, 2-0, before the Islanders (12-5, 2-0 SLC) took the nightcap of the doubleheader, 1-0, in eight innings.

A total of five errors doomed UTSA, as two of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi’s three runs of the day were unearned.

The Islanders took an early 1-0 lead in opener by virtue of a fielding miscue. After a pair of singles, senior shortstop Carrie Monroe committed her first error in 60 chances, which allowed Cassie Redman to score. Senior starting pitcher Danye Holmes limited the damage with a strikeout before a lineout ended the inning.

Two frames later, Hannah Schwarz used her speed to reach on a bunt single and she then went to third on a single up the middle to set up the Islanders’ second mark of the game. She scored on Caley Jeter’s sacrifice fly to right for the 2-0 advantage.

Jordan Trujillo (6-2) took control from there and she allowed just one hit while striking out 10 in going the distance.

The bats for both teams were silent in game two thanks to three solid pitching performances.

The Roadrunners had their best scoring opportunity with a two-out rally in the third. Monroe and freshman Siera Sproul each singled, but a ground out ended the threat.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi left the bases loaded in the fourth and neither team managed a run in through seven innings.

However, a pair of UTSA errors led to a run in the eighth to give the Islanders a walk-off triumph.

Sophomore Haylee Staton (1-4) took the tough-luck loss after allowing a pair of hits in three innings of relief, while Vianca Pesina (4-1) scattered four hits and fanned five in a complete game victory.

UTSA will look to break its 11-game losing streak on Wednesday when the two teams meet at noon in the series finale.
