Oregon State downs UTSA in 10 innings, 10-7

SAN ANTONIO — Carter Bell's pinch-hit three-run double with two out in the top of the 10th inning led Oregon State to a 10-7 victory over UTSA on Monday afternoon at Wolff Stadium.

The Roadrunners (4-5) entered the ninth with a 5-3 lead, but Danny Hayes connected on a three-run homer to right field, which put the Beavers (5-3) in front and they tacked on an insurance run on an error by freshman Blake Denman.

Trailing 7-5 in the bottom half of the inning, UTSA sophomore Daniel Rockett stroked a one-out single to left center and he came around to score when senior Tyler Carpenter swatted a double to the right-center gap. Sophomore Ryan Dalton pushed the game into extra innings one batter later with a single into left, sending Carpenter plateward with the tying run.

James Nygren (1-0) picked up the win after allowing one run on two hits and fanning a pair in 1.2 innings.

Denman (0-1) took the loss after giving up the three 10th-inning runs on two hits and two walks.

Carpenter went 3-for-4 with four RBIs, while Rockett added three hits and scored three times.

Andrew Susac paced the visitors with a pair of hits.

Oregon State jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second off UTSA freshman starter Matt Sims.

The Roadrunners plated a pair in the third with help from an Oregon State error and they added single runs in the fourth and fifth stanzas to take a 4-3 lead. The Birds tacked on an isurance run in the seventh when Rockett scored on a wild pitch.

Sims gave up three runs on three hits over three innings in his first career start. Senior Kevin Clarke relieved him in the fourth and he struck out a half dozen Beavers in three scoreless panels.

UTSA concludes its six-game home stand with 6 p.m. contest with Houston (5-2) on Tuesday.
