Gibson earns first-team NABC All-District 23 accolades

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Senior guard Devin Gibson was named first-team All-District 23 by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC), the organization announced on Wednesday.

A first-team Southland Conference selection, Gibson leads the league in assists (5.5), steals (2.8) and minutes (34.6) per game and ranks fourth in scoring (16.3 ppg), ninth in free-throw percentage (.794) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.6) in addition to being 20th in rebounding (5.1 rpg).  He has registered eight 20-point games and five double-doubles this season, including just the second triple-double ever recorded by a Roadrunner with 17 points, 12 assists and 11 rebounds against Samford (Dec. 20).

The 2010 Southland Student-Athlete of the Year and 2008 Freshman of the Year has broken the circuit’s career record for steals (312) and UTSA marks for free throws (607) and starts (106) and will tie the school standard for games played (115) on Wednesday in the team's State Farm Southland Tournament first-round matchup with Northwestern State. Gibson also has 526 career assists, which is 10 shy of the program's all-time standard and he ranks third in scoring (1,578), fifth in free-throw percentage (.764) and seventh in rebounds (499) and field goals (444).

The Houston native is the only player in the NCAA averaging at least 16 points, five rebounds, five assists and 2.5 steals per game this season.

Gibson is the first Roadrunner in program history to earn first-team all-district accolades and the sixth all-time, as he joins second-team honorees Eric Cooper (1989), Marlon Anderson (1996), Roderic Hall (1998), Devin Brown (2001, '02) and LeRoy Hurd (2004).

He was one of five players chosen to the first team, joining Sam Houston State's Gilberto Clavell, Nicholls' Anatoly Bose, McNeese State's Patrick Richard and Southeastern Louisiana's Trent Hutchin.

Will Pratt (Northwestern State), Jenirro Bush (Jackson State), Demond Watt (Texas A&M-Corpus Christi), Kevin Galloway (Texas Southern) and Travell Jones (Texas Southern) were second-team honorees.

Selected and voted on by member coaches of the NABC, 245 student-athletes from 24 districts now are eligible for the State Farm Coaches’ Division I All-America teams, which will be announced on Saturday, April 2, during the Final Four in Houston.

Located in Kansas City, Mo., the NABC was founded in 1927 by Forrest “Phog” Allen, the legendary basketball coach at the University of Kansas. Allen, a student of James Naismith, the inventor of basketball, organized coaches into this collective group to serve as Guardians of the Game. The NABC currently has nearly 5,000 members consisting primarily of university and college men’s basketball coaches. All members of the NABC are expected to uphold the core values of being a Guardian of the Game by bringing attention to the positive aspects of the sport of basketball and the role coaches play in the academic and athletic lives of today’s student-athletes. The four core values of being a Guardian of the Game are advocacy, leadership, service and education. Additional information about the NABC, its programs and membership, can be found at nabc.org.
