Johnson III named Southland Conference Player of the Week

FRISCO — Sophomore Melvin Johnson III was named Southland Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced on Sunday.

Johnson III posted a pair of 20-point games last week to help UTSA to a 2-0 record and its fourth consecutive berth in the State Farm Southland Conference Tournament.

The 6-foot-5 guard scored 20 points behind a 4-for-6 effort from beyond the 3-point line and added three rebounds and a pair of steals in Wednesday's 70-58 victory against Central Arkansas. The Dallas native then poured in 16 of his 21 points in the second half of Saturday's postseason-clinching, 68-63 win at UT Arlington. He also contributed four boards, three assists, two thefts and a block to help the Roadrunners to their first win at Texas Hall since 2006.

Johnson III averaged 20.5 points and shot 54.5 percent from the floor in the pair of triumphs, including 6-of-10 from downtown, and was a perfect 11-for-11 at the free-throw line. Over the last three contests, he is averaging 20.7 points per outing and has made 12-of-19 (63.2 percent) 3-pointers and 12-of-13 (92.3 percent) free throws.

It marks the third weekly award for a Roadrunner this season, as junior Stephen Franklin and senior Devin Gibson were honored on Dec. 13 and Jan. 24, respectively.

UTSA (16-13) will be the No. 7 seed at this week's Southland Tournament and will face second-seed Northwestern State (18-13) at noon on Wednesday, March 9, at the Merrell Center in Katy.
