UTSA to begin five-game road trip on Friday

SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA baseball team will embark on a five-game road trip that begins Friday with the opener of a four-game series at New Mexico. The set will be played at Isotopes Park in Albuquerque.

UTSA (5-5) is coming off a six-game home stand at Wolff Stadium in which it posted a 3-3 record against Saint Joseph's, Oregon State and Houston. The Roadrunners split four contests with the Hawks over the weekend, dropped a 10-7 heart-breaker against the Beavers on Monday held off the Cougars' ninth-inning rally for a 7-6 victory on Tuesday night.

Led by sophomore Jake Wood's team-leading .421 batting average, UTSA ranks second in the Southland Conference with its .325 clip. Sophomore Daniel Rockett is hitting .417 with three doubles, nine RBIs and a dozen runs scored.

On the mound, senior right-hander Taylor Walton has won both his starts this spring and has yet to allow a run in 11 innings of work. The Midland native has scattered just seven hits and struck out eight.

New Mexico enters the series winless in its first eight games of the season. The Lobos were swept by then-No. 11 Arizona State, followed by a mid-week setback to intrastate rival New Mexico State and a four consecutive losses to Creighton. This weekend is the end of a nine-game home stand.

New Mexico finished 38-22 a year ago and finished second in the Mountain West Conference (MWC) with a 14-8 ledger. The Lobos advanced to the NCAA Tournament but saw their season come to an end after posting a 1-2 record at the Fullerton Regional.

Kyle Stiner leads the Lobos with a .393 batting average, while reigning MWC Player of the Week Mitchell Garver is batting .357 with a team-high eight RBIs. Meanwhile, Bobby Mares leads the pitching staff with a 2.45 ERA and a dozen strikeouts in 11 innings.

UTSA and New Mexico never have met on the diamond.
